#23 the end of the road

Finally I have finished. There were times when I had my doubts. It's easy to become frustrated and give up. But it's even harder to stick with it and persevere. One the whole, it was a relatively good experience. Libaries need to keep up with new technology. This was a good way to accomplish that goal. Everyone could work at their own pace. If you got stuck and needed help, all you had to do was ask on your blog or someone you work with would help you out. It's good to see us all working together and willing to help each other out.

What I liked:
Online generators - it was fun looking at them all and choosing the one you liked the most.
You tube - this was one of the easier tasks for me. The exercise was straight forward and the instructions where easy to follow.

What I disliked:

So many usernames and passwords - It took me awhile but I finally start using the same ones each time.

Flickr - I didn't understand how to do it. This "challange" was one of the hardest for me. Without the help of Starr, I would probably still be on #5.

Podcasts - because I had such a difficult time finding one that allowed me to add it to my blog. I found many that you could listen to and download.

#22 E-Books

I liked the Tumbling Talking Books because it allows you to chose my genre or in alphabetic order. It is great that childrens books are available. Also, I was impressed that the site had books in Spanish. Reading an e-book on the computer is not my thing. It seems like it would be hard on the eyes. Another reason it that I use the computer all day at work and would not want to put on additional strain on my eyes. I would listen to the audio e-books. I walk almost every day and listening to books would definitely make the time go faster. One more comment on e-books on computer, they would be great for people who are at home most of the day and like to use the computer. E-books would be great for people who do not drive or drive only out of necessity.

#21 Podcasts

I found this excercise to be very frustrating. I started you yahoo postcasts and searched for information on health. I tried healthy living, fitness, health and eating, exercise and health diet and exercise. There has information on all the topics but it was only to listen to and download. I did not find one that I could subscribe to. But all the not lost I did find Nancy Pearl Book Reviews. This you can subscribe to at http://kuow.org/rss.php?program=nancy. I had the pleasure of meeting Nancy at Marilyn Sniderman's house. She is a well read individual. I'm that I will try to read some of the books that she reviews.
Next, I went to podcast alley. Here I tried to search for music. Maybe my search was to general but I didn't find anything that I liked. Then I did a new search on fitness. The one I liked was Health and fitness 1001. This site has information diet, exercise, fitness, nutrition and other health related subjects.

#20 You Tube

Well after several tries I finally got one to post. I enjoyed looking at some of the You Tube sites. I can't believe how many there are so many. My problem was finding one that would transfer to my blog. You Tube could be useful in at a library. For example, YPL could have one on the new Special Delivery.

#19 Web 2.0 awards

For this exercise I decided to pick music. I went to www.PANDORA.com. It's an easy site to navigate. All you do is pick a song or artist. I picked Layla. It gave me a list of artist who performed this song. Just pick one and listen. Easy as pie.
Next, I went to travel. The site a picked was www.farecast.com. It's searches for airfares. You can search expedia, cheaptickets, priceline, bookingbuddy and cheapair. I chose bookingbuddy because I had ever heard of it. After you put in the flight info you pick from the above. So I went with cheapair. I found a great price on tickets from PIT to DFW only $187.79. That's round trip. What I deal.
Finally, I went to books. I went to www.lulu.com. On this site you can publish books, directories, brochures and a host of other things. One of the new choices was photobooks. You can make a 8.5"x11 photobook of 20 pages for $15.95. Each additional page is .50 cents. It doesn't sound like a bad deal.

#18 Zoho Writer

I like this as an alternative to microsoft works. Works is on my home computer and it's different from microsoft word which we use daily at work. To me it's very user friendly. I like the ability to create spread sheets. It was more functions than works. There are 50 templates to chose from. That's a lot of choices. Also, you can use the search box to find the template that best fits your needs. It has the function of being able to preview an image before its inserted. I love the yellow faces!!! The ability to share is kind of scary to me

#16 Wiki's

Princeton Public Library wiki was great for summer reads. I liked the different choices of genres. It would be nice if it had a YA wiki. Nice to have year round to see what people thought of different books. The short reviews gave you just a taste of what the book was about.

Library Success: A best practice wiki-I think it is a shame that people are vandalizing that site. I do not see the point. Info is free to everyone. Now they have to go to extra steps to protect it.

Bull Run Library wiki - I liked the e-mail newsletter for educators and home schoolers. Several libraries afforded book discussions for example, group for people who like mysteries, comtemporary reads and I the library might try African American reads.

Also, I know why a keep seeing wikipedia on the web

#15 On Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

I read the articles by Rick Anderson and Michael Stephens. I agree that libraries should plan for patron needs. We need to know what technology is out there and which if any of it can help our patrons. Libraries should not purchase a product just for the honor and glory of saying we have it available at our library. This is a waste of both time and money. Both of which are precious. Mr. Stevens saids that technology is changing quickly and we should be aware of both what's new in the library world and what is new in the business community.

Mr. Anderson believe's that the library should streamline its printed materials and focus more on technology. I disagree. Libraries should have a well around collection. We need both printed and web based materials. Althrough technology may be changing quickly a large majority of patrons are not. People have trouble ajusting to change. Mr. Anderson also states that the technology should require little to no instruction from staff. I don't care how simple it may seem to us, we still do a lot of hand holding. One example is "Seach Ohio". Some patron don't understand why the librarian can't do it on their computer.

#14 Technorati

I did a search on Learning 2.0. There were 22,255 hits. However not everything was about Learning 2.0. In the text, either learning or 2.0 was highlighted in the text. The blog directory had 578 entries. The top flavored blog was Boing Boing with 2,656 entries. This sight was interesting. It's about differnent cultures and technology. Top search was Youtube with 1,608,474. The results are from all over the world and include text in many different languages.

#13 del.icio.us

This is a good site for people who are doing research projects. Some students have to do group reports, this would be great for them. Easy access of info at one place. It's like one stop shopping. I set up an account.

#12 Rollyo

I picked my own topic and found websites that are very useful. This is one that I will continue to use. It took sometime to find the sites but now that I have them it's a great tool. I am learnig more about computers every day. The only problem is maintaining the knowledge. It's like they say "if you don't use you lose it." But all in all I feel it's a good idea.

#11 Library Thing

Creating your own personnal library was easy. I like that your can read and write reviews and add books to your library. The only problem was trying to figure out how to put the information on my blog. I ask several people, unfortunately they were also having problems. Finally, after many frustrating tries Starr and I finally figured out how to do it.

#10 Online Generator

I had a hard time with #10. When I transfer my cake I got computer language instead of the picture. Thanks to Michelle to showed we how to get the cake on the page. I found the intructions for doing the assignment alot clearer than trying to transfer things to your blog once the item is created.

#8 RSS feeds and #9 Newsreaders

This is very cool. I set up an account on Bloglines. I like that you can pick things that interest you. There is a lot to choose from. I picked things that interested me. Like dogs, a mean who does not like dogs. Fashion gotta keep up on the current trends even if I cannot afford them, it is fun to see what is new. Also, one of my selections was Billboard. Some of the artist are people I never heard of maybe this will open some doors to some music that I do not usually listen to.

#9
Techorati was my favorite. I found it easy to use. Good for current events and library info.
Feedster - I looked up toy poodles and got sites about dog supplies and other breeds of dogs.
Maybe it was just a bad search choice. I found Syndic8.com the hardest to use.

#7

Technology has come a long way. When I first started at the library there was no internet access. We had computers with the library catalog. Now not only do librarians have internet access but so goes the general public.

3rd party

The trading cards was really neat. I can make pictures of my grandchildren in their teeball outfits and send to the fam. Photo Fortune was a lot of fun. Ag's blog has it and like getting you're fortune without eating the cookie. Trip planner is useful for people that travel. It remindered to calling AAA and ordering a trip tic.

mashups

Smilebox was one of way favs. Fun to create slideshows with music and motion-great for vacations pics and grandkids. Montager excellant to search for pictures. It gives you many pics to choose from. Great for patrons looking for pictures for assignments

about flickr

I found flickr hard to use. To me it wasn't user friendly. But you have to remember that I have afraid to touch something because I might do something I don't know how to fix. I guess you could say I'm not a risk taker.
